Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (abbreviated as NAD), also known as DPN, or codehydrogenase I or coenzyme I. In mammals, there are two states, oxidized (NAD+) and reduced (NADH). The oxidized (NAD+) has a maximum UV absorption spectrum at 260nm. Through various deaminases, it accepts a hydrogen atom and an electron from the substrate and becomes a reduced (NADH), with a maximum absorption at 340nm. β-Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is used as a coenzyme in redox reactions, as a donor of the ADP-ribose moiety in ADP-ribosylation reactions, and as a precursor of the second messenger molecule cyclic ADP-ribose. β-Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide also serves as a substrate for bacterial DNA ligase and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, which use NAD+ to remove acetyl groups from proteins.
